This village has an unusual problem for a small place. It is split down the middle by geology. West of the road the ground is flat deltaic sand about fifteen metres deep; east of it the land tips over into the valley on Brant and Tuscola silt loams at grades of twelve to twenty per cent. West of Mount Pleasant Road the ground is a deltaic sand deposit around fifteen metres thick — flat, free-draining, and short of water by the middle of most summers.
Trees there root deep because they have to, which makes them well anchored, chronically thirsty, and steady customers for tree trimming. What you see is tip dieback in August, small leaves, and early colour, and every one of those is a water symptom rather than a disease.
For tree trimming on that side it means conservative percentages. A tree already short of reserves closes a wound slowly, so the volume that comes off in one visit matters more here than the textbook figure suggests.
East of the road the land falls away toward the river on silt loam at grades between twelve and twenty per cent, and everything about the job changes.
Tree trimming on a grade starts from one fact: slope-grown trees carry their weight downhill. That produces reaction wood, an asymmetric crown, and a root plate doing very different work on the uphill and downhill sides.
It also changes the mechanics of the work itself. Nothing cut on a slope stops where it lands, machinery has to be positioned rather than parked, and a limb that would be a straightforward drop on the flat becomes a rigged lower. Say which side of the road you are on when you ring for tree trimming; it changes the assessment before anyone arrives.
There is a copper beech at 631 Mount Pleasant Road that the County designated as a heritage property in 2012. A tree, designated in its own right.
That is worth mentioning for one reason: it establishes that around here a tree can be the thing of value on a property rather than an obstruction on it. Plenty of the mature trees along this road are of a similar generation, none of them replaceable inside a working lifetime, and all of them worth careful tree trimming rather than cheap tree trimming.
Trees that old want restraint. Take the dead wood, ease a defect, win back the headroom, and stop there. Heavy tree trimming on a tree past maturity trades ten years of life for one neat afternoon.
The County's own assessment of the Nature Park at 755 noted that the perimeter woodlands lack a good tree canopy. That is a useful piece of information for anybody planting.
It says the ground here does not automatically produce a closed canopy just because trees are on it. Establishment takes deliberate effort — the right species, autumn planting, mulch, water through the first two summers, and formative tree trimming while the tree is small.
So when a tree comes out, the replacement decision is worth taking seriously rather than defaulting to whatever the garden centre has in stock in June.
On the first of July 2026 a storm closed Mount Pleasant Road between Burtch Road and Russell Street. Anyone here remembers it.
What a system like that does is not finished when the road reopens. It loosens root plates that did not fail, opens unions that did not part, and leaves hangers in crowns that nobody can see from the ground until the leaves come off.
That is why the sensible move after a storm is to have the rest of the property looked at while the tree trimming crew is already there, and why a good many of the trees we are taking down this year were standing perfectly well in June.

Named trees, and on each of them the specific limbs. A line reading "trees to front" is not a specification.
The proportion coming off. A fifteen per cent reduction and a forty per cent reduction are not variations on one job. They are two jobs, and the tree trimming quote should say which you are buying.
The fate of the brush, and separately the fate of the timber. Through the chipper and away, cut and left in a heap, or piled where you indicate — each carries its own figure.
What is excluded. The stump, the hedge nobody mentioned, the neighbour's overhang.

Tree trimming lowers the load on a crown and on the unions carrying it. On a valley grade that tree trimming is worth real money, because the load is already off-centre.
What it will not do is fix a root plate on a slope that has begun to move. If the soil on the uphill side has cracked or lifted, the conversation is a tree removal conversation.
No tree trimming fixes a hollow butt either, and none of it rebuilds a tree somebody topped fifteen years ago.
Ash the borer has finished with. No work up in a dead ash brings it back, and every winter it remains standing takes another option off the table and adds to the bill.

A split union rather than a suspect one. Tree cabling and bracing catches some in time; past a point, nothing does.
A tilt nobody remembers from last summer, and especially one on the valley side with broken ground uphill of it.

We will not touch a conductor. That is the utility's work until they say it is not.
We will not price tree trimming from a photograph. A picture hides a lean, flattens a slope and shows nothing about what is underneath.

The whole property gets walked, not only the tree that prompted the call. Around here the trees on a lot usually share both an age and an aspect, so their problems arrive together.
Then what is underneath gets read, because it decides the tree trimming method — a roof, a driveway, a hydro service, the trail, the road, or a slope that governs which way anything cut is going to travel.
You are left with a written tree trimming scope. Trees named, cuts specified, debris accounted for, one figure. You pay for neither the attendance nor the paperwork.
On the day the ground comes first: cones set, lines rigged, and everything portable moved well clear. Only then does anybody climb, and the tree trimming works downward.
